We’ve created the following list of our best tips to help you get the most effective use out of your Tone Protector.
Use only 84% packets In your Tone Protector Chanter Cap
The 84% humidity packets are by far the best option to give you the greatest improvement in sound and stability, regardless of where you live in the world. Note: for the Tone Protector Reed Case, please use 75% packets.
When you first get your Tone Protector, start by using TWO 84% packets. Two packets gives your Tone Protector more power to stabilize the humidity level faster and remain stable for longer. To install the packets, do not fold them. Simply insert them as far as they will go, one on each side of the Tone Protector slot. Then simply press the rest of the packet into the slot. It may be a little tight to fit both packets in, but they will fit snugly.
If your Tone Protector consistently reads higher than 84%, you can remove one packet and save for future use, keeping just one packet in the Tone Protector. Need help with this step? Click here to watch a short video on how to insert the packets into your Tone Protector.
Never seal the bore of the chanter using a cork or stopper.
Do not seal the chanter in any enclosed tube or case. The Tone Protector is designed to allow airflow to the reed to help reduce the chances of getting mold on your reed.
Monitor the humidity level.
The digital hygrometer/thermometer accurately measures and displays the humidity level within the Tone Protector. Check on it regularly to make sure things are working properly. If the humidity level displayed on the hygrometer is not what you expect (too low or too high), you can first try resetting the hygrometer by removing the battery and putting it back in. If the humidity level is consistently excessively high (over 90%), please contact us.
Replace the packets every 6-12 months or sooner if needed.
Packets can be purchased from the BagpipeLessons.com Online Shop.
The packets will get used up (dried out) faster in climates where the air is drier.
Do NOT add water to your Tone Protector or to the packets. Adding water to the Tone Protector can damage your digital hygrometer/thermometer and will increase the likelihood that mold can grow on your reed. For the best and most consistent results, always quickly replace dried out packets with fresh ones.
