Kenny G, Sir Mix-a-Lot, and Me: How Did This Happen?

A friend texted me a photo, and I could not believe what I was looking at. Kenny G. Sir Mix-a-Lot. Two global superstars, both from Seattle. And standing right next to them, glowing in the dark with blue skin, orange hair, Frankenstein stitches and bagpipes made out of bones… me.

I was sure it was AI. It’s not. It’s a hand-painted black-light mural at Monster Mini Golf in Bellevue, near Seattle, and somebody decided that the three most iconic musicians from Seattle are a saxophone player, a rapper and a bagpiper. So of course I had to go see it for myself.

Key Points in this Video:

  • The text that started it all, and why I was sure the photo was AI
  • Monster Mini Golf: hand-painted, glow-in-the-dark murals with a local Seattle and Washington State theme
  • The reveal at the 18th hole: Un-Kenny G, Grrr Mix-a-Lot and Gory Jori Chisholm
  • My score of 13-13-13, the most Halloween score of all time, and my bagpipes made of bones
  • Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Foo Fighters, Heart, Jimi Hendrix… and somehow the list is a saxophone player, a rapper and a bagpiper
  • What happened when the staff found out who I was
  • My invitation to Kenny G and Sir Mix-a-Lot: one round of Monster Mini Golf on me

Do you know who painted this mural? Tell me in the comments on YouTube. I’d love to say thank you.

Video Transcript: Several months ago, I got a text from a friend. It was one of the most surprising and unexpected messages I have ever received.

It was a photo, and in that photo were three people: Kenny G and Sir Mix-a-Lot, two global icons of music and culture, huge superstars, and both from Seattle. And the third person in that photo was me. Now, I’ve been playing the bagpipe for almost 40 years, but this is one of the most unexpected things that has ever happened to me in my musical career.

So what on earth am I doing next to Kenny G and Sir Mix-a-Lot? Let me tell you the amazing story.

I’m Jori Chisholm from BagpipeLessons.com, and here’s the story. My friend was out playing mini golf with his kids, and his son goes to school with my kids. In the middle of the round, the kids stop and point at the wall and say, “Hey, why is Colin’s dad up on that wall?” He looks up, and there I am.

So of course, he takes a picture and texts it to me. When I saw it, my first thought was, “This has to be AI.” So then I had to go see it for myself.

We’re gonna go here to Monster Mini Golf and check it out.

And supposedly in there is a painting of Kenny G, Sir Mix-a-Lot, and me in sort of a monster-themed, fluorescent Price Is Right setup. We’re gonna go in there and check it out.

So this place is called Monster Mini Golf, and it’s in Bellevue, near Seattle. Picture mini golf in the dark. Everything is under black light, and every wall is hand-painted in glowing fluorescent colors.

Ghouls, monsters, ogres, and lots and lots of scary clowns. There are Monster Mini Golf locations all over the country, and each one of them is painted with its own local theme. And ours is a love letter to Seattle and Washington State.

There’s Adam West, the original Batman, who grew up here. There’s Bill Nye the Science Guy. We have the Cascade Mountains, Washington apples, the Space Needle, our 520 floating bridge, and evergreen forests everywhere. All of it painted in glowing colors, all of it with a monster twist.

So we go in, and then I spot it. At the 18th hole is a mural of three musicians playing The Price Is Right with a vampire Bob Barker.

I’m gonna go over here, ’cause this is crazy. So here on the wall we’ve got, let’s see, we’ve got Kenny G, legendary Seattle-based saxophone player, and his score is all G’s. And then we have Sir Mix-a-Lot, the rapper, also from Seattle. And then, oh my gosh, that’s me! That’s so crazy. So, Jori Chisholm, and I…

I guess I’m in the lead. And what’s also crazy is that I have orange hair, and my bagpipes are made out of bones. This is so crazy. All right, there it is. It’s the real deal.

He’s not Kenny G, he’s Un-Kenny G, and his score is all G’s. There’s Grrr Mix-a-Lot. He only has one point. And there it is: Gory Jori Chisholm, with a score of 13-13-13, the most Halloween score of all time.

I’ve got stitches on my head like Frankenstein, and my drones are made out of bones. How do bone drones hold their tuning? Now, I love being up there with Kenny G and Sir Mix-a-Lot. This is really awesome, but the three most iconic musicians from Seattle?

We have Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Foo Fighters, Heart, Jimi Hendrix, and yet somehow the list is a saxophone player, a rapper, and a bagpiper. If you know who painted this, I would love to know. I would like to say thank you. And of course, while we were there, we had to get Un-Kenny G to play a song.

This is perfect. We’re playing it. Play it, Kenny!

Yeah. Smooth jazz, people. Smooth jazz.

Playing Monster Mini Golf is really fun, and for me, it was extra surreal and hilarious golfing with my family right next to a giant glowing painting of myself.

And then partway through, my wife walks up to one of the staff and she says, “See that guy on the wall there, Gory Jori? Yeah, that’s this guy right here, my husband.” But the staff were actually really excited. The manager came over and asked to take my picture, and they put it up on their Instagram page.

They gave my kids some free stuff, and they invited us to come back.

We went another time with some friends, but I wanna go again, and this time I wanna play with Kenny G and Sir Mix-a-Lot.

So Kenny, Sir, I think we should come down here and we should play a round of Monster Mini Golf. What do you say? Send me a message. Let’s do this.
